Dear old Red John

I am now sitting down at my computer to view tonight's episode of The Mentalist. The promo for it has shown a lot of promise for more Red John clues seeing as Patrick will, once again, be going up against his nemesis. I am going to write this post as I am watching the episode so spoiler alert for anyone who has not seen it yet. Ready for excitement? Ready for Red John? Alright...lets begin. :)

jane and haleyOkay, this is just at the very start and it's a small thing, but the little girl in the grave yard feels like a small clue to me. Children can be very trusting but, at her age, they also know not to talk to strangers or get in their cars so they can bring them to graveyards. It would make a lot of sense, however, if the girl trusted him because he was a cop. Children know to trust policemen and authority figures (even if that's not always the best thing for them...especially when that authority figure is a serial killer in disguise).
Okay, pausing again (5 seconds later). Since when does Luther show up to a crime scene? He also says that "Red John or someone claiming to be Red John" brought the girl to the grave yard. If he goes over to the girl and she doesn't recognize Luther then I would say it was the later. Red John has a lot of followers to hide behind. Jane upsets Wainright when he hypnotizes the girl so she won't remember and then threatens him to not question her. He might be mad that Jane is acting in a way not according to his plan or he's just playing the part.

So after Jane burns the Red John files, Wainright and Lisbon are talking out in the hall. He says he thinks it was a cry for help and he just wants to "find out what the issue is." I don't have much on that but I feel like it could be important. They are both talking to Jane now so I'll resume and get back to you on that one. Okay, so Jane says "He's [Red John] right. It's time to give up." and Luther says "Seriously?" Not sure why but him responding like that seems weird for some reason, like he's digging. I think Jane just wants to throw out the idea that he is off the scent to see what Red John does. As he is saying all this, Luther is standing quiet in the background, watching him carefully. Of course it could just be a concerned boss, or it could be Red John trying to work out what Patrick's game is.

Okay so we don't see Wainright again until after the investigation for this episode has ended. Lisbon is taking Jane there now so maybe there will be some more tidbits to add before this post comes to an end along with the episode. Jane: "Yes, I crossed the line. I had to in order to get Marks. If you don't get the bad guy then what's the point of all this." Luther: he doesn't say anything but there is an interesting and confusing look on his face that I can't translate at this moment. Then, when Lisbon suggests he take a time out, Luther suspends him and then angrily says that he will personally recommend that he not ever be allowed back as a consultant. This is interesting to me. Luther is reacting strangely. It's almost as if Red John wants to take away the one thing Jane would keep in his life so that he is forced to dwell on him again. Then when Jane insults him, he gets so angry he runs at Jane, ready to attack him. That kind of anger in a man like Luther Wainright is either acted out for the benefit of the unsuspecting people around him...or it's based off of more than a few insults and one bad move on Jane's part. There is something far deeper going on inside that man's mind.

I'm not sure what Jane being fired will bring and I was hoping there was going to be a lot more Red John stuff in this episode than there was, but it still told me a lot. I was suspicious of Luther from the start but as we have come along, I've gotten even more so. He is present in episodes and moments that he isn't necessarily needed in and now this sudden attention to him and his anger at Jane (especially since he has been patientand accepting of Jane's behavior up until now)...the writers want him in there more than many of the other bosses have ever been. Luther is an important piece to the Red John puzzle and I am still inclined to believe that he is THE MOST important piece.

I'm pulling this from the Mentalist wiki because I found it interesting and it ties into this episode in particular: "He has fascination with Jane -- to the point where he would risk getting caught to see what Jane will do. Red John is a major narcissist and is extremely angered by people acting like they know him, even more so by those who lie about him, which was clearly shown when he killed Jane's w Jane was insulting him, acting like he knew him by calling him a "mama's boy" etc. That is one of the things that angers Red John. As for the other part, the idea of risking getting caught to see Jane's reactions, that is something that made me suspect that Red John would stop using pawns and move into the game himself (one of the reasons I find that Luther would be an excellent candidate for Red John).

Adding more from the wiki: "His known accomplices have mostly been closet psychopaths who are able to appear completely normal, but all have some sort of criminal past. This to the point that Jane even refers to John's accomplishes as "Disciples". Once again, Luther's past in psychology kicks in as well as his connections to the criminal world through law enforcement. He is very good at convincing people to do what he wants them to...to trust him.

"Red John is also extremely intelligent (again like Jane), as seen from his being able to hack into theCBIcomputers and watch the agents' actions for quite some time without being detected. He can also set up phony companies and bank accounts to keep his identity a secret. Finally, Red John is a master manipulator, which is evident in his ability to get people to trust him (as seen with his accomplices)." Luther is a smart young man and he has the proper training and connections to accomplish all these things whilst remaining undetected.

Until the next update, dream of Red John. :)
